Nerve Pain! What is That?

When your hands get to close to stove, what would be the reaction? Oops! You will suddenly take off your hand. This is nothing but the nerve reaction. As soon as your hand goes close to stove, the nerve endings are activated and they send a pain signal to the brain. And you pull back before you burn yourself.

But if you have nerve damage, that system won’t work properly. Damaged nerves will send false signals to the brain which causes real pain.

The above mentioned example is a small glance of the whole nervous system. There is much more to understand about it, it is beyond the scope of this blog. Here we will try to understand the nerve pain.  Whatever we do, the nervous system is involved in that, from breathing to controlling the muscles and to the senses of temperatures.

We have three types of nerves in our body;

1.       Autonomic nerves: These nerves control voluntary/partially voluntary activities. E.g., heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, digestion

2.       Motor nerves:  These nerves control movements and actions of your muscles.

3.       Sensory nerves: These nerves collect the information from our skin and muscles and send the signals to brain or spinal cord. Then it is processed over there to let us feel pain or other sensations.

What are the symptoms of nerve pain?

Symptoms due to nerve pain depend on the location and type of the nerve involved;
1.       Autonomic nerve involvement;

a.       Dizziness or fainting upon standing up
b.      Difficulties in swallowing, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite
c.       Sweating abnormalities
d.      Vision abnormalities
e.      Sexual dysfunction
f.        Bladder dysfunction

2.       Motor nerve involvement;
    1. Muscle weakness
    2. Muscle cramps & twitching
    3. Loss of muscle (muscle wasting through lack of use)
    4. Loss of control or co-ordination
    5. Muscle paralysis
3.       Sensory nerve involvement;

a.       Tingling
b.      Numbness
c.       Prickling sensation (pins and needle sensation)
d.      Stabbing type of sensation
e.      Feeling of walking on a wool

There are chances of damage to two different types of nerves, or even damage to three types of nerves. e.g., you may feel weakness in your leg and burning sensation simultaneously.

Now you might have clear idea about the nerves and the possible symptoms of the nerve damage as particular. Because the nerves are essential to all we do, nerve pain and damage can affect our quality of life seriously.  To know how to tackle with such damages keep reading our blogs. Next blog would be regarding treatment of nerve pain.

Viroc Hospital appreciates price slash on Knee Replacement implants

There was no control over medical orthopedic implants. Margins on orthopedic implants was as high as 300% of landed price. This was due to huge margins at various levels of the supply chains.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has started monitoring the prices of orthopedic implants also.

According to NPPA the total trade margin is the MRP minus import price. In this, distributor & hospital get a margin of around 300%. Ultimately the company importing these implants earns a margin of around 70-75%. Around 1.15-1.50 crore people require knee surgery in India, but they couldn’t get the benefit due to such unexpected prices.

Now at present Government has announce slash over these implant prices. The costs of knee implants will now have around 60-65% reduction. This fleecing slash over implant costs seems like a good news for the people with knee problems. Knee implant costs were ranges around 80,000-1.15 lacs. Now they are available at 65,000/- INR.

Recently committee meeting was set at our hospital. This decision of government was not absorb by the orthopedic surgeons nationally and locally in Baroda. Viroc hospital aims to their patient. So, to transfer brilliant idea came into picture during the meeting. The mission was not to gain acute patients, but it was larger than life. The idea was, Viroc hospital welcomes the price slash to implants and hospital will provide the same discount in procedure/hospital chargers rather increasing it. Despite of sustaining such loss, no other institute would be able to absorb such slash by decreasing their own hospital costs.

Such idea was cursed by the other orthopedic doctors locally. We appealed them that this decision was for social cause. This mission would benefit not only the patients but there would be benefit to whole implant industry and to orthopedic surgeons also. The only armamentary to compensate such losses for implant industries and for hospital is to increase all over turnover.

Such decision is ultimately going to increase the number of patients to get maximum benefit. So, by keeping a larger goal in mind this mission was set to serve maximum advantage to the patient and ultimately to the society.

  •  Hold it for 10 seconds
  •  Get your mobility back by doing this 5-7 times

 3. Warm water soaking

  •  Soaking your fingers in warm water for about 8-10 minutes will allow your fingers to move smoothly and will also reduce pain and swelling.

 These morning habits would show excellent results in early detection of locking/triggering finger in almost 6/10 sufferers.
Only 4-5 patients may require a small procedure;

 “Walk In and Out Procedure”

 1-2cm minor incision and release of swollen tendon with total satisfactory success rate.

  •  Hold this for 5-10 seconds and repeat 5-10 times for better results

 6. Towel grab
  •  Place your hand over a towel with palm facing downward
  •  Grab the towel with help of your hand but without curling of fingers
  •  Hold it for 10 seconds and then relax
  •  Do it for 10-15 times

 7. Make your finger dance
  •  Dancing finger exercise is a synchronized movement of fingers which would help you to get relieved from your triggering
  •  Support elbow on a surface with fingers pointing at ceiling with thumb near to the fingers
  •  Slowly bend fingers , curl them towards palm, make a fist and again open up them, as if fingers are dancing up and down 10-15 repetitions are required minimum

 8. Massage
  •  Most popular and effective treatment
  • Massage the finger with aloe Vera gel (Natural anti-inflammatory agent) or with the coconut oil gently from bottom to the tip of the finger 5-10 minutes are enough
  •  This will also improve blood circulation and will also help to reduce swelling of the ligament Ultimately leads to faster recovery

 These morning habits would show excellent results in early detection of locking/triggering finger in almost 6/10 sufferers. Only 4-5 patients may require a small procedure;

 “Walk In and Out Procedure”

 1-2cm minor incision and release of swollen tendon with total satisfactory success rate.

If your answer is “yes “to any of questions asked above then i will tell you what has been happened to you;

This is known as Tennis Elbow (pain in outer part of the elbow).

It is not necessary that this will happen to tennis players only.

This can happen with a housewife, a desk job worker, a cook, a computer worker, a teacher, as they all have a work which makes repetitive forearm muscles movement.
Prolonged and repetitive movement leads to inflammation of the point from where these muscles arise.

Occurs due to overuse of your forearm (extensors) muscles.
This will lead to pain in outer part of your elbow (side away from your body)
Very common condition, yet not to be ignored.

Overuse of muscle could involve repetitive and prolonged lifting, gripping, pinching, turning a jar lid or door knob or key, making a dough etc.
More frequently occurs in dominant hand.

Caution: do not confuse other condition with tennis elbow. Tennis elbow pain can be localized at the outer part of the elbow i.e., bony prominence out there. If you have pain rather than this site then you may have other problem.

If you are awakened at night due to this pain

If you are not able to sign on a cheque

If you are facing problem in lifting your mug full of milk

Let me tell you one thing, you are not alone!!!!!!!!!

Now you probably are wondering
Will this type of elbow pain go away on its own or is it more serious condition that needs to be evaluated by your doctor?

First of all, if you have severe symptoms and even not able to extend your arm, then you required doctor’s attention!!!!!!!!!

But if you don’t have money tree out back, then it’s time to think smarter and strategically.
